On February 21st, 2015 we held our third annual UF VBMA Business Conference at the UF College of Veterinary Medicine in Gainesville, FL. Practitioners who attend were provided with 5 free continuing education credits by attending talks from three different speakers. We bring in speakers from all over the country to speak about business and practice management in the veterinary world.

At this year's conference, we were pleased to host our three speakers, Dr. Anthony DeCarlo, Dr. Amanda Donnelly, and Mrs. Elise Lacher.

Our first speaker, Dr. Anthony DeCarlo, is the CEO and co-founder of the Red Bank Veterinary Hospital, and the current president of the New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association, a trustee for The Seeing Eye Foundation, on the advisory board for Project Animal International, and a proud volunteer for the Ronald McDonald Cancer Camp for Children and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Monmouth County. Dr. DeCarlo gave an informative talk on opening and expanding your own practice.

Our second speaker was Dr. Amanda Donnelly, President of ALD Veterinary Consulting. Dr. Donnelly owns ALD Veterinary Consulting in Tampa, Florida. Her areas of consulting include financial management, human resources, marketing, client service training, and leadership coaching. Dr. Donnelly gave an important presentation on Communications that Foster Teamwork.

Mrs. Elise Lacher, owner of Strategic Veterinary Consulting, Inc. was our third speaker. Elise is a social worker by training, but successfully completed the CPA exam on her first attempt, so is well versed in the language and function of business. In her role as consultant and owner of a practice management consulting firm, both skills are put to use on a continuing basis.Today, she only works with veterinarians to help them become successful business owners who enjoy coming to work each day. Elise gave a wonderful speech on Financial Literacy for Practicing Veterinarians.

This year, added a Q&A panel with several FVMA veterinarians to create a more interactive experience for students, practitioners and practice managers. This conference is an amazing opportunity for students to network with veterinarians and practice managers from a variety of fields in the veterinary profession.

We have had really positive feedback about this conference over the past two years. Here are some quotes from our anonymous comment cards last year:

  • "I liked the variety between the speakers on medical, financial, and management issues."

  •  "I wish NAVC was like this."
